My best testimonial makes marketers drool. It has a big, tangible outcome.

But it’s also my most problematic testimonial.

In a video, Yao Yao, an entrepreneur from Australia, says that after 13 months of coaching with me, she made $1million.
“Put that front and center,” everyone told me. “Build a case study. Shout it from the rooftops.”

But here’s the context.

When we started coaching together via Zoom, Yao was already running her second successful business. She knew the tactics and the numbers.

Yet she was stuck. Fear of losing money. Guilt over letting go of her business partner. Her own thinking painting her into a corner.

So I asked one question that flipped her script: “Tell me why you can pay what’s owed and start again from scratch.”

She lit up. Her energy shifted.

“You changed my life with that question,” she told me face-to-face in Orlando, Florida, at Funnel Hacking Live in September 2022.

Yao is bright, ambitious and extremely energetic. Recently, she emailed me: “I’m in China. I just ran a live event with 200 paid attendees and hit 1 million CNY in 70 minutes.”

Her results are real. They’re powerful.

But if you’ve never launched a business before, hitting a million bucks in a year is possible, but far harder. Your starting point matters.

Integrity is a biggie for me. That’s why I wrote in my coaching manifesto: “I will not sell dreams I cannot deliver.”

That brings me to this insight from Timothy Gallwey’s The Inner Game of Tennis, which applies as well to business building as it does to sports.

Performance = Potential – Interference

Your skill, experience and drive are your potential. Doubt, overthinking and tension are the interference. Remove the interference, and your full potential will flow into your performance.

That’s what coaching with me does. It clears the noise. It frees you to be your whole self.
